A transit visa enables a foreign national to pass through the territories of the Contracting Parties during a journey from a third State to another third State, and is granted on condition that he is guaranteed entry to the State of final destination and that the journey must reasonably take him through the territories of the other Contracting Parties.

The granting of a visa is always subject to the fulfilment of the minimum conditions required, in general, for the issue of a short-term ‘tourist’ visa. A further requirement is that the foreign national must, where necessary, possess an entry visa for the third country of final destination.

The transit visa is also issued to foreign maritime workers who intend to embark or disembark from ships, flying the Italian or foreign flag, at ports located in the national territory or in the Schengen area, upon confirmation of the presence of the ship issued by the competent Italian Port Authority.
